EAL

At Archbishop Ilsley our priority is to ensure that all pupils are enabled to have access to a broad, balanced, rich and relevant curriculum. We have over fifty languages spoken within our school community. This is celebrated amongst staff and pupils.

We believe English is best learnt through our knowledge rich curriculum and EAL pupils are encouraged to play a full part in all learning opportunities.

EAL learners make the best progress within a whole school context, where pupils are educated with their peers and are within the classroom environment.

The school structure and overall ethos help EAL pupils integrate into the school whilst valuing diversity and heritage.

Pupils who are newly arrived to the country are gradually integrated and have an induction programme in our Learning Resource Centre Base. Initially they will be taught ‘survival’ classroom language which will equip them with vocabulary and phrases which will help them navigate their way through classes.

Knowledge about the English language proficiency of learners is important for our school and teachers. We use the following proficiency codes for pupils to help with support given.

The provision for EAL pupils are:

  • Use of Flash Academy which is UK’s No1. EAL platform for schools with 48+ home languages, supporting language development and acquisition for pupils with English as an additional language.
  • Parental support information when EAL families join us and meet Miss Salas and the EAL coordinator.
  • Small group work focusing on all areas of English Language.
  • Step Up to English course for our KS4 pupils enabling them to gain a qualification.
  • Students have opportunities to be entered for an additional GCSE in their home language.
  • Access to reading eggs that help pupils with phonics and reading.
