Welcome to English

The English curriculum at Archbishop Ilsley is designed to submerse students into a vast range of texts that will challenge, engage and excite. Students education at KS3 will explore a chronological canon of literature in a variety of different forms starting with Greek mythology and ending with the World Wars. We aim to provide students with the tools and knowledge to enjoy the beauty of language and evaluation of a writer’s craft.

Through reading, staff explore with students the relevance of literature in today’s society; having a chance to reflect and develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Our curriculum’s purpose is to equip students to be lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and through English, learn about the world we live in. The colourful variety of texts students study and read through our reading programme, helps them to express their ideas by writing with creativity and purpose. We also promote the use of oracy, encouraging students to discuss complex ideas presented by writers we study.
