Welcome to the English Department

The English curriculum at Archbishop Ilsley is designed to submerse pupils into a vast range of texts that will challenge, engage and excite. Pupils in KS3 will explore a chronological canon of literature in a variety of different forms starting with Greek mythology and ending with the World Wars. We aim to provide pupils with the tools and knowledge to enjoy the beauty of language and evaluation of a writer’s craft.

Through reading, staff explore with pupils the relevance of literature in today’s society; having a chance to reflect and develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Our curriculum’s purpose is to equip pupils to be lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and through English, learn about the world we live in. The colourful variety of texts pupils study and read through our reading programme, helps them to express their ideas by writing with creativity and purpose. We also promote the use of oracy, encouraging pupils to discuss complex ideas presented by writers we study.

  • To be able to identify and interpret explicit and implicit information and ideas from a range of different texts.
  • To explain, comment on and analyse how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers.

  • They will respond to ideas/themes by having a personal response whilst using textual evidence to support their ideas.
  • Where appropriate, they will understand the relationships between texts and the context they were written.
