Welcome to the Geography Department

Through teaching Geography, we aim to inspire in all pupils a lifelong curiosity and fascination about
the world and its people. We seek to develop pupils who will flourish in school and beyond; develop
well-rounded citizens who are skilful and employable.

  • Physical environments and concepts/processes – the conditions, processes and interactions that explain features and distributions, patterns & changes over space and time in a diverse range of physical environments.
  • Human environments and concepts/processes – the conditions, processes and interactions that explain features and distributions, patterns & changes over space and time in a diverse range of human environments. To include people’s values, attitudes and beliefs.
  • Interactions – the links/interactions between physical and human processes, the effects of these interrelationships on the physical world, and how human activity relies on the functioning of natural systems. The idea of sustainable development is relevant here.
  • Place and space – knowledge and understanding of the location of globally significant places. Diverse and similar places, people and the idea of interconnectedness.
  • Scale – the ‘lens’ through which we see subject matter – ranging from local, regional, national, international and global.
  • Skills – the ability to observe, collect, communicate, investigate, analyse and understand geographical information through written and spoken (vocabulary), cartographic, graphical, numerical, visual, GIS and fieldwork skills and sources.
  • Where possible teaching and learning should draw on pupils lived experience and ideas.
  • Contemporary geographical local and global issues should be covered where appropriate.
  • The development and appropriate use of a wide range of specialist terms is essential as geographical knowledge and understanding cannot be expressed without geographical vocabulary.
  • Facts and knowledge are essential as they help us to think, but concepts enable us to understand – we link facts together through thought.
  • From identification, to description, to knowledge, to understanding, to explanation, to evaluation.
  • The development of a wider range of more complex geographical skills.
  • Study that moves from the familiar/local to the unfamiliar/global
  • Mr. Royston – Head of Geography Department and Humanities Faculty
