At Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School all departments are encouraged to organise trips and visits to enrich their curriculum offer. It is our belief that by giving pupils the opportunities to experience the world outside the classroom not only are their subjects brought to life, but the cultural capital of our pupils is even further enriched. Examples of the trips that pupils have the opportunity to go on are, The Black Country Museum, Challenge Academy, The Houses of Parliament, Blackwell Adventure Centre, RSC Stratford and Bletchley Park.
Additionally, pupils can also participate in residential trips; these opportunities are again valued not only for their academic content but more importantly for the benefits they have on a pupil’s moral, social, spiritual and personal development. Examples of the regular overseas residential visits that pupils benefit from are; annual trips to Berlin, Belgium and the Battlefields Trip and trips to both France and Spain.
Sixth form students also participate in the Global Links Project where last Year 12 students visited Cambodia. This is an annual trip.
At Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School we also offer an extensive extra-curricular programme where pupils can access an array of opportunities. These opportunities are open to all and are designed to encourage pupils to engage in safe, enjoyable activities before, during, and after the school day.
The extra-curricular programme offers clubs and activities that build on curriculum time, offering new opportunities, experiences, and the chance to further develop essential life skills. We are committed to this provision for all of our pupils and firmly place it at the heart of our school culture; extra-curricular sports and activity clubs are on before, during (lunchtimes) and after school.
At Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School we believe that healthy competition can enhance a pupil’s drive, attention, physical effort, and learning. The social motivation of competing against one’s peers can challenge a pupil to work much harder on tasks than they would independently feel compelled to do so. As a result, all pupils are given the opportunity to compete in both intramural and inter school competitions. These competitions range from academic subject specific competitions to inter house competitions to numerous sporting and outdoor adventurous activities.
As part of our commitment to school sports and competition Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School is the host site for the Yardley School Games Organiser. The Yardley SGO serves the local areas of Acocks Green, Sheldon, Yardley, Kitts Green and Tile Cross. The partnership comprises of 22 primary schools, 8 secondary schools and 4 SEND establishments.
The main aims of the partnership are to support young people in gaining positive experiences of physical education, school sport and physical activity whilst focusing on the school games values of teamwork, self-belief, respect, passion, honesty and determination. As the lead school, our pupils are able to not only compete in numerous sporting activities but also lead many of the primary sporting festivals gaining invaluable soft skills.
Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School has very strong links with a number of local clubs, coaches, facilities and providers in the majority of sports and activities offered. These include Solihull Moors FC, Edwardians RFC and Birmingham Rockets Basketball Club.
